Lay Ministries

Acolytes (Click for current schedule): Open to boys and girls 10 years and up. Acolytes are trained and prepared to assist at the altar in all regular and special services. Supervised by Rick Watson.

Altar Guild (Click for current schedule): Members prepare the altar for all services and care for the altar appointments. Members are appointed and trained by the Rector. Coordinated by Sterling Dymond and Doris Smith.

Bread Ministry (Click for current schedule): Participants greet newcomers with bread bags supplying visitors with information about St. John’s history, ministries, and worship, as well as a loaf of bread symbolically inviting visitors to celebrate communion here.

Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen (Click for current schedule): An ecumenical service project at the Salvation Army in Bangor.  St. John’s volunteers cook and serve hot noon-time meals to over 100 people once a month(4th Tuesday). Marla Saliba arranges for supplies to be bought. 

Eucharistic Ministers (Click for current schedule): (Previously known as layreaders) These men and women, licensed by our Bishop, serve at the Sunday and Wednesday Eucharists by reading the lessons, administering the Chalice and leading the prayers of the people, when the Deacon is absent, are under the direction of Ed Ferguson.

Meals Ministry:  People of the parish make and deliver meals for those who have had surgery or a long illness as well as those who are new parents.  Kim Miller coordinates this special ministry. 

Office Angels: Volunteers help the parish office with bulk mailings, assembling newsletters and bulletins, stuffing envelopes.  Sterling Dymond coordinates this ministry on an as-needed basis. 

Second Saturday: FREE meal offered monthly from noon - 1:30 p.m. for any in need of food and fellowship. Volunteers are always welcome and needed!  The proceeds from Quarters Sunday  (every 4th Sunday) help fund this ministry, headed by Gary Creaser.

Usher/Greeters (Click for schedule): Assist on a rotating basis at weekly and special services throughout the year by handing out service bulletins, seating people, and helping to receive the offerings.  Roger George directs this ministry.

Eucharistic Visitors: Men and women, licensed by our Bishop, serve the Eucharist to sick and homebound Parish Family members.
